What is a fish, Daddy ? 30 MARCH, 2024

Remember back in June of 2023 when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that it “was egregiously wrong” for Maine to impose costly regulations on lobstermen in the state’s interpretation of the Endangered Species Act ?

After January, 2024, Lobstermen in Maine are now required to fish with a tracking device attached to their boats,  and are required to inform the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission when, where, and how they catch lobsters through monthly reports.

The lobster industry in Maine alone is a more than $1 billion part of the state’s economy, yet, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is set to enact even more regulations next year, including a rule that would require lobstermen to throw one-pound catches back into the water.

Sound familiar Oregon ?  or better yet Alaska ?  those Nor’easters and their Scallop/Lobster/Cod boats have a ways to go if they want to follow in our West coast Tuna/Albacore, Anchovy, King-Dungeness, Salmon industry failures.

If it's successful, lets tax it, and make money off of it…   If after that, it's "still" successful,  let us regulate it to get even more dollars out of it, then, if it fails…we can create rules and guidelines to subsidize it …and at least we can then use it as a tax write-off !  yea, thats the ticket!

All of us, as full-time mariners, whether you “full-time” live aboard, “full-time” work the sea for a living as a dock worker, boat builder, shipyard worker, seaman, fisherman, or global sailor are subject to this system being run by week-ender hobbyists, green people, and various breeds of do-gooders in politics who regulate what they do not know, they call it compliance "submitting; usually surrendering power to another"

The days left are few, the new generation taking over your boots and slicker will never know about the past history, or appreciate your craft, heritage, memories, or the freedoms lost… it is being rewritten.

Eat lab grown Salmon pulp, fish meal patties, and radioactive pacific tuna, tell the grandkids about how Lobster, Crab, Beef T-bone, and Cheddar, even Apples used to taste… and where they came from, before these squeeze tubes.

Try to explain to them how food is grown, pulled from the water, or harvested, who used to build and man the devices that did that... the Impossible Burger patties and Beyond Sausage -- are plant-based. Cell-based meat, also known as cultured meat, replicates cells from animals to create meat.

The US meat market is already occupied by plant-based meat alternatives – and ..venture capitalists are getting serious about cell-based seafood...  San Diego-based BlueNalu has raised $84.6 million since its founding in 2018, and Wildtype has received $100 million in series B funding with investments from Leonardo DiCaprio, Bezos Expeditions and Robert Downey Jr’s FootPrint Coalition, among others.
